The Rt. 26 Lady in White Investigation

Location: Poland, Maine

The Story:

This case is of particular interest to Jessica, as she grew up in this town and has grown up hearing stories about the Route 26 Lady in White.

Here is the story:

"The ghost hitchhiker of Route 26 comes with a variety of stories. In the most common, the woman wandering the dark roads is the murdered bride of George Knight, slashed to death in 1856 in her farmhouse on Route 11. The woman will deliver a warning, or perhaps a prediction, to the person who picks her up. Then she vanishes.

In another version, the roaming woman is the ghost of a young girl killed on her way to the prom. She is said to wander near the Poland Spring Inn, waiting for a ride in her eternal quest to make it to the dance. Like the slain Mrs. Knight, the ghost of the prom girl is said to vanish before the ride is over." [The Lewiston Sun Journal]

In the story Jessica grew up with, the lady is a bride who was killed in a car accident on the way to her own wedding. When a driver picks her up, she asks to be taken to the church where the wedding was to take place and then somewhere along the way, she vanishes into thin air.

In the early 1970's, The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that there was a sheriff who had picked up the Lady in White for hitchhiking near Shaker Village. He hand-cuffed her and put her in the back of his police car. Then, he went around to the driver's side of the car, got in, threw his hat on the seat, looked in the rear-view mirror... and didn't see anybody in the back seat. He turned around to look... and there was nothing but a set of handcuffs laying on the seat.

On July 11, 2009, a 16-year-old boy picked up the Lady in White and, at her request, gave her a ride to the church on Route 11. A police officer had driven by and had seen the boy parked there while he and the Lady in White were sitting in the car. Then the Lady in White vanished. The boy raced away to find the police officer and when he caught up with him he told the whole story and the police officer made a report. Here is the story covered by The Lewiston Sun Journal:
